4 Ways to Stay Relevant on LinkedIn
In order to stay relevant in today’s business world, it is vital to create a LinkedIn for yourself. If you are not familiar with LinkedIn, it is a networking tool that allows you to build your professional identity online, connect with colleagues, discover new professional opportunities, and get the latest insights you will need to better yourself at your career.
Once you have your LinkedIn created, you must look at the content. Simply filling out your profile with past and current experience is a good start, but will not be enough to stand out to potential employers. In order to stand out and stay relevant, you must engage yourself with your connections.
So, here are four ways that you can stay relevant and stand out to potential employers in your future:
1. Status Updates: Similarly to Facebook, people will begin to know who you are if you consistently post content to your page, thus allowing for your name to pop up on your connections’ home pages. Great content to post could be articles, blog posts, any third-party content or newsletters. Anything that you read online that you feel has great quality and would be insightful for your connections to also view is a great way to get involved. That being said, not everything you read that is interesting should be posted. Make sure that you are not posting so much that people feel bombarded.
2. Create a Schedule: With your status updates comes scheduling. With everyone’s busy schedules nowadays, it would be unrealistic to expect anyone to keep up with LinkedIn 24 hours a day. To make this easier for you, create a specific time every day where you will post at least one thing. This way, you are keeping up with your posts on a daily basis and will not forget to stick with it.
3. Dress to Impress: This is key! You must dress exactly for the job that you want. People who have photos on LinkedIn are seven times more likely to have their profiles viewed. If you do not have a profile picture, you are already reducing your chances of getting views. Make sure that your profile picture is up-to-date, engaging and appropriate. If a potential employer is impressed with your appearance, they will be more prone to viewing your profile and experiences.
4. Stay Positive: Do not be a debbie downer on your LinkedIn page. Basically, do not act how many do on Facebook or Twitter with their constant complaints about how tired they are from work that day. Keep your content positive, interesting and engaging. Make sure that everything you post on not only LinkedIn, but social media as a whole, would be something that you would not mind your boss viewing.
With more than 175 million members, and a new member joining every two seconds, it can be difficult to stand out on LinkedIn. By sharing status updates, scheduling a specific time to post, keeping your profile picture professional and upgraded and staying positive, you will be more likely to stand out and have many profile views!
